Mobile devices conveniently allow us to communicate more efficiently and effectively. However, we must treat our mobile devices like our computers and protect our personal information against cyber criminals. Our personal information is important, valuable, and nearly impossible to recover once compromised.


At 1st Bank Yuma, we encourage you to take steps to secure your data before someone has a chance to steal it.


How we protect you

We're committed to making Mobile Banking secure and protected. When using our Mobile Banking applications you're protected by these security features:


  • 256-bit encryption technology to help prevent unauthorized access.
  • Password protection is your first line of defense and is required if you are using Mobile Banking with Mobile Deposit for your 1st Bank Yuma access. Your smartphone is equipped with this option. Find this in your settings and create a secure password only you will know.
  • Automatic session expiration. The application will time out if the customer has not used the application for several minutes.
  • Privacy protection. No private data is stored on the mobile device.
  • Masked account numbers. It masks account numbers with X's whenever practical within the application.
  • Multi-factor authentication. Mobile Web provides a multi-factor authentication feature that appears whenever the user attempts something unusual, such as using a different mobile device or accessing the site from a new IP address. This feature asks the customer personal questions, and in order to continue, the answers must match the ones they entered when they signed up for the service.


Update your mobile devices


Essentially, mobile devices are small computers with software that you need to update just like a computer or laptop. Make sure all your mobile devices (tablets and smartphones) have the latest security protection by updating your device.


Guard your personal information


Protect your smartphone or tablet device just as you would a computer. Set a strong passcode on your mobile device and be cautious about releasing your information on the websites you visit.


Research before you download an app


Before downloading an application (app) on your mobile device, review the privacy policy and understand what specific information the app can access.


Protect your money


Verify that the websites you visit are secure while shopping or banking through your mobile device. A good indicator is to look for websites with 'https:' in the address bar. This means that the site takes additional measures to secure your information. Many other sites now feature a color-coded browser or address bar to indicate it is a safe and secure site to visit. If the site is highlighted green, this indicates that it is a safe website, yet if it is highlighted yellow or red, avoid those sites.


Don't root or jailbreak your phone


The process of rooting (on Android phones) or jailbreaking (on iOS devices) is used by people hacking into their own device to gain access to a greater variety of apps and functions. Avoid this process as it not only voids your warranty, but also removes manufacturers' built-in security and leaves your device vulnerable to possible malware attacks. The best thing you can do is leave your phone or tablet as is.


When in doubt, don't respond


Fraudulent texting, calling and voicemails are on the rise and should be a concern. Be cautious if requests for your personal information or a call for immediate action is required. This is almost always a scam.

Fake Mobile Banking apps


Criminals may develop and publish fake mobile banking applications that look like 1st Bank Yuma's app in order to steal your Online Banking credentials. Here are a few tips to help determine if the application is not 1st Bank Yuma's:


  • The developer or author of the application is not 1st Bank Yuma or DHI Computing Service (our Core Processor)
  • The app is being promoted on third-party websites, somewhere other than the 1st Bank Yuma website or the official app store for your mobile device
  • There is a charge or fee for downloading the app - we do not have a charge for our app
  • If you spot any of these warning signs, never download or install 1st Bank Yuma's mobile banking app. This will help protect your accounts and information.




SMShing is defined as the act of sending a fraudulent URL or phone number via SMS text message. It is similar in nature to phishing, which typically happens via email. A criminal sends a text message in hopes of tricking you into replying with financial or personal information or clicking on links that will sneak viruses onto your mobile device. Do not respond to a text message asking you for personal or financial information. 1st Bank Yuma will never ask for your information in this way.


Social Engineering and Email


Mobile devices can also be infected by email attachments. Before you open an email:


  • Verify the source and recipients.
  • Watch for poor grammar and spelling mistakes.
  • Be especially careful with items sent to your Spam Folder.
  • If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Rule of Thumb - When in doubt, err on the side of caution.


Lost or stolen mobile devices


Your information is at risk, when your mobile device is lost or stolen. Here are some tips that you can use now to protect yourself in the event your mobile device has gone missing:


  • Password-protect your device so that it can't be easily accessible unless the password is entered
  • Enable your mobile devices automatic screen-locking tools to lock your device when not actively in use
  • Consider turning on your device's remote wipe program (iOS - iCloud Find My Phone or Android Device Manager) to delete the data from your device
  • Keep a record of your device's make, model and serial number
  • Most common online threats


Viruses, malware and other programs may infect some mobile devices intending to steal your personal information or financial details. If your device supports traditional antivirus products, consider installing that software. Regularly, backup the device's data and keep a copy in a safe a secure location, such as an external hard-drive. This will allow you to restore your data in the event you need to reset your device in order to remove a harmful software threat.
